    1. The trial was a fight over evolution and the role of science and religion in public schools and in American Society.
    2. Tennessee had a law that forbid the teaching of evolution in public schools, and John T. Scopes, a teacher in Tennessee, was being prosecuted for teaching evolution in his science class in Dayton, Tennessee.
    3. William Jennings Bryan, an extremely famous lawyer and politician, headed the prosecution.
      1. He said that teaching evolution in public schools would ruin the youth of America by damaging their faith in God.
    4. The trial was covered world wide in newspapers, magazines, and on the radio.
    5. In the end Scopes was found guilty and the Tennessee law forbidding the teaching of evolution was upheld.
    6. The debate over evolution versus creationism still rages on today and is still an issue in public schools.
